The Importance Of Dental Office Management Managers

If there is anything, other than a dentist, that any dental office management team needs it is a dental office manager. The dental office manager is responsible for running the dental office with all aspects of business except the actual dentistry. Most dental office management personnel are people that used to work at the dentist’s side as dental assistants and are familiar with all the terminology and most of the practices of dentists.

In a small office, the manager should be able to personally run all administrative work. He or she is responsible for patient traffic, the scheduling of appointments, data entry and bookkeeping. The dental management manager of a small dental practice also needs to supervise the chair-side dental assistants and anything else that the dentist cannot take care of.

In a large office, the dental office manager only needs to do the supervising and administrative office work. In an office that hires bookkeepers, data entry personnel, and secretaries, the office manager’s job becomes more about payroll and other human resource type obligations.

Dental office management personnel can become managers in all sorts of different ways. They can have on-the-job training; dental assistance, dental management or other dental work certifications.

Office managers can also have bachelor’s degrees in business, business administration, human resources or other business and/or administrative degrees. It is imperative that the dental office manager be well aware and well trained in dental practice, state policy for both small businesses and dentistry practices alike, as well as OSHA and HIPAA policies.

Dental office practice managers that belong to chapters of either the American Dental Assistants Association (ADAA) or the National Association of Dental Assistants (NADA) or both, have an opportunity for further help and education whenever needed. Since the dental office manager is the second most important person at any dental practice, his or her knowledge is a huge asset to the survival and success of the practice.
